Cornell Alumni Farm-to-Table Adventure

  • Wednesday, October 11, 2017, 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Come and join us for the Club's first Farm-to-Table Adventure!

The Cornell Club of Rochester has partnered with Cornell University Cooperative Extension to offer an Agritourism excursion to the Cornell Alumni and their families this fall. We will be visiting various Monroe County farms and Agribusinesses. Space is limited to the first 39 registrants.

On this tour, participants will visit prominent farms, orchards, a seed company and brewery and talk directly to the growers and producers. They will have a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scene look at the various facets of local Agriculture while learning about the latest technologies that help make farming a viable business. A commentary and Q&A session will be provided by Jarmila Haseler, Agricultural Educator, CCE of Monroe County, to enhance the learning experience. With recreation in mind, there will also be plenty of time to relax, socialize and have fun.

The sites graciously hosting the tour participants are:

  • Zingler Farms, a 580-acre fruit farm, producing apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and other fruits on the shores of Lake Ontario will demonstrate the management of high density trellised apple orchards, including high-precision orchard maintenance and harvest equipment.
  • Camman Acres, a family-run poultry farm featuring natural-setting, fresh pasture rotation for their no-hormone, no-antibiotics chickens and turkeys.
  • Hurd Orchards, a daughter & mother run fruit and flower farm sharing the passion for their historical orchards, delightful backyard and kitchen garden in a charming setting of the lake Ontario plains. Lunch accompanied by the owners’ commentary will be served there.
  • Harris Seed, a Rochester-based seed, plants and supply purveyor to growers and gardeners nation-wide since 1879 will showcase their seed vitality testing labs and cold storage, sorting and packaging facility and vegetable trial plots in both high tunnel and open soil.
  • Rohrbach Brewing Company – this Flower City’s original craft brewery, serving the regional finest quality brews will host a tour of their brew house, beer tasting and light refreshment that will conclude the tour.

Due to the kind sponsorship from the CALS Alumni Association, the organizers are pleased to offer a discounted price. For more tour info contact Jarmila Haseler, (585) 753-2550, jh954@cornell.edu or John Bruns,(585)398-8328, jhbruns3@gmail.com
