Soil Submission

Cornell Cooperative Extension offers a soil pH/texture test and provides recommendations for modification. A more comprehensive nutrient analysis is available from Dairy One in Ithaca, NY. The reliability of a soil test is only as good as the sample you submit.

The cost for the soil pH test is $5.00 per sample. Test results will be mailed to you within 3-5 working days.

A soil test does not explore insect, disease, or many other cultural problems. You may first want to contact our Garden Helpline (585-753-2555for help with your problem or submit a plant sample to the Diagnostic Lab.

How to Take a Soil Sample

Using a soil probe, spade or trowel take several samples from the area and put a clean container. Submit approximately a pint of soil.

Take soil from:

  • Vegetable and flower gardens– 4 to 6 inches below surface.
  • Lawn – 3 inches below surface.
  • Trees/shrubs– 6 to 12 inches below surface.
  • Food plots – 6 to 8 inches below surface.

Combine all samples and mix thoroughly.

If soil is wet, spread it on paper and allow to air dry overnight. Do not heat the soil.
