What is small fruit?
The name 'Small fruit' comes from the fact that the edible fruit grows on small
perennial plants. Most people know them as berries.
Here is the list of the berries commonly grown in our region:
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
- Blueberries
- Cranberries
- Currants
- Grapes
- Juneberries
- Gooseberries
Growers and other agricultural experts refer to them as 'berries' but all the small fruit combined makes up for a significant part of our local agriculture. Many are already in season and many will be coming soon. This year has been a great year for our local small fruit harvest so far.
Look for fresh Monroe County raspberries in your area at farmers' market or farm stands.

Make a Blueberry Slump!
Ingredients (6 servings):
- 3 cups fresh blueberries
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1-1/4 cups water
- 1 tsp grated lemon peel
- 1 tbs lemon juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbs sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 1 tbs butter
- 1/2 cup milk
1. Mix the fruit, sugar, water, lemon peel and juice in a large skillet, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5mins uncovered.
2. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl, add coarse pieces of butter until mixture resembles large crumbs. Add milk quickly, stir until moist.
3. Spoon the dough (dumplings) onto berries. Cover and cook over low heat for 10mins. Keep covered while simmering. Serve dumplings into individual serving bowls, top with sauce. Serve warm.
For additional taste add vanilla ice or whip cream.
