The purpose of the Vegetable Variety Trial Garden (VVGT) project is to identify vegetable varieties that perform well under a range of growing conditions across New York State—conditions that reflect those commonly found in home gardens.
Varieties that receive high ratings are added to the Cornell Garden-Based Learning (CGBL) Selected List of Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners in NYS, serving as a valuable resource for counties and home gardeners statewide.
In addition to evaluating plant performance, the VVGT aims to highlight and celebrate the cultural diversity of gardening traditions. The trials offer opportunities to share and demonstrate a variety of cultural practices—both agricultural and community-based—that can inspire and inform home gardeners.
